We’ve really stepped into high gear in the last few weeks as the weather turned more spring like. So each Friday, we are going to try and sum up 5 big and small farm happenings of the week, we’re calling it Farmer Friday.
1. Drained “Lake LaRochelle” from our front yard. We found all the snow melt and drainage hit a low spot right by the driveway. The lake got so full it was in danger of overtaking the driveway. There is a drainage ditch it is suppose to run through under the driveway but the drainage pipe was/is clogged. Doug pumped over 3,000L of water into 3 water cubes and then watered the garden and the ditch. It took 2 days to get it down to a puddle like state. If we ever wanted to put in a second pond location, this would be it!
2. Major tree & shrub trimming. I trimmed up the Saskatoons bushes, and apple trees. It was an excellent time for reflection on making room for new growth.
3. We made 2 compost bins out of upcycled wire and began filling them with leaves, and green compost waste we had been putting in our compost tumbler all winter. We raked up many leaves, and even brewed a little compost tea. We quickly ran through green materials, so I went to the local (new) Booster Juice location and they agreed to give me their compost each day. So grateful!
4. We harvested our first tray of microgreens, and took them to a few subscribers of our Farm Share program to try and provide feedback. So far, they have been a hit! We have tried them on our tuna melts and a simple tomato and cucumber salad at home.
5. We weed whacked down all the grass in our front pollinator garden, marked out the annuals and newspaper and peat mossed the rest. We are hoping for a load of black earth or garden mix soon. So far the piles have been too wet to move so far. Our warm (18c) weather today should help dry things out.
